From Hide to strap

Handmade Full Grain Leather Belts

Each Camino belt strap is entirely handmade in Mexico City by master leather artisan Ulises Cruz, who has spent 17 years refining traditional leatherworking techniques. Our straps are cut from full grain leather; the strongest and most visually expressive layer of the hide. Full grain leather is not sanded, corrected, or artificially coated, preserving the natural texture and tonal variation that give leather depth and presence.

Vegetable tanning, whereby the hide is processed with plant-based tannins rather than chromium chemicals, gives our leather firmer structure, greater depth of color, and a surface that evolves with wear. It softens, darkens, and develops a natural patina unique to each owner.

The strap is crafted entirely by hand over 4-8 hours of benchwork. The result is layered color with visual depth, perfectly polished fray-resistant edges, disciplined stitching, and a belt that ages beautifully over decades.

Material Selection

We personally visit our leather suppliers in León, Mexico to select individual hides taken from the sillero section of the animal; the portion along the back and haunches where the fiber structure is tightest and most durable. Leather from this area produces straps with cleaner lines, stronger edge finishing, and more graceful aging.

We work exclusively with full-grain vegetable-tanned hides, selected for clean grain structure and balanced firmness.

HAND DYEING

Each hide is hand dyed in controlled layers at Ulises’ workshop. Unlike factory drum-dyed leather, hand application creates subtle tonal variation and surface depth. The result is color that grows richer over time rather than remaining flat.

Hand Cutting & Strap Formation

Each strap is measured and cut by hand, following the natural structure of the hide. Placement is adjusted according to grain direction and fiber strength to maintain clean lines and structural balance.

Layer Bonding

For structured models, layers are bonded and pressed by hand before stitching. Precision here defines the belt’s profile.

Hand Stitching

Perforations are hammered into the leather and linen thread is used to saddle-stitch each belt by hand, a process that takes 4-5 hours. Working this way allows stitch tension and spacing to be refined continuously, producing a seam that sits naturally within the leather.

Edge Finishing & Burnishing

Edges are cut, beveled, sealed, and burnished repeatedly until smooth and polished. The fibers are compressed to create dense, fray-resistant cantos that frame the strap and define the belt’s silhouette.

Hardware Attachment

Hardware is hand sewn into place with balanced alignment and proportion. The leather strap functions as the architectural counterpart to a 950 silver buckle.
